Welcome to Chenqing 100! We are a drabble community for 魔道祖师 | Módào Zǔshī, 陈情令 | CQL | The Untamed, and related RPF. It was created because several people on Twitter and DW expressed a wish for such a community and the challenge of writing concise, complete stories that drabbles offer.
You must join the community in order to be able to post to it. Subscribing is not joining, though you are welcome to just subscribe if you only wish to read the works posted to the community.
A new prompt is posted every Friday. The old prompt is closed to fills when the new one is posted. Prompts will be tagged, and fills of old prompts will be allowed during amnesty periods.
I have tried to keep the rules and guidelines few, so as to encourage engagement. Revisions will happen as situations arise, and members are free to contact me either via PM or through email at ranalore at gmail dot com.

Sticky: Prompt Suggestions Post
Mar. 17th, 2021 04:00 pmThis is the post where you can leave suggestions for future drabble prompts. Prompts should generally be in the form of single words or short phrases, though I will be polling the community to find out interest in multimedia prompts. I will also try to get up a Google spreadsheet with planned prompts for cross-referencing, but for now, don't worry about whether you are suggesting a prompt someone else has already suggested. If you come to this post after the community has been established for a while, you can search the tags to see if a prompt has already been done.
Leave up to ten prompts in a comment to this entry (more than ten and I find I lose track). You may leave as many comments as you like.

This week's prompt features no euphemisms whatsoever, and is by Zhang Wencheng, with translation by Howard S. Levy:
A Poem About Writing Brushes and Inkstones
Press down on the hairs,
Letting the writing brush
Point wherever it pleases;
To get the desired color,
You must rub and stir.
Grinding is so hard to achieve,
Because too much water is used.
You have until midnight your time on Friday, April 24, to answer this prompt. Please post your fills of the prompt as separate entries to the community (i.e. not replies to this entry), tagged with the prompt tag. You may post multiple standalone drabbles per entry in addition to drabble sequences and series.
As a reminder, this community has no official presence elsewhere. You are encouraged to share the prompt on social media, if you so desire. It may take me a bit to create the AO3 collection, so please be patient.
Also, I'm going to go ahead and drop a link to the prompt suggestions post here. New suggestions are always, always welcome.

Prompt: Night Mooring at Maple Bridge
Apr. 10th, 2026 04:33 pmThis week's prompt is by Zhang Ji, translated by Sheena Dizon:
Night Mooring at Maple Bridge
The moon sets and crows caw as frost fills the atmosphere
Under the riverside maple trees, the fisherman’s light disrupts my sleep.
Outside Gusu City is Hanshan Temple,
At midnight, the sound of bells reaches the ferry.

Prompt: On Beyond-the-Clouds Temple
Apr. 3rd, 2026 07:43 pmIt is National Poetry Month here in the United States. To celebrate, every prompt this month will be a poem. This week's prompt is by Xue Tao, as translated by Jeanne Larsen:
On Beyond-the-Clouds Temple
I have heard of the moss
at Beyond-the-Clouds:
where winds blow high,
where sun is near,
it’s free of the finest dust.
When level cloudbanks splash
their dye
on the Lotus Wall,
it seems to wait for a poet
and for the jewel moon.

Prompt: Chunfen/Spring Equinox
Mar. 20th, 2026 05:06 pmOur next prompt celebrates Chunfen (春分), the traditional observance of the Vernal Equinox in China. This is the fourth of the twenty four solar terms of a lunisolar calendar first organized in the Warring States period and later refined during the Han Dynasty. Not just an astronomical term, this period represents balance in the heavens, in nature, and in ourselves. This was the time of planting in agriculture, of eating light meals that were neither too warming nor too cooling, and of leisure activities like kite-flying. It was also believed it was easier to balance an egg vertically more easily during this period, which would bring luck. As with Xiazhi and Dongzhi, Chunfen is closely tied to the concepts of yin and yang, and is a period in which they are believed to be not only in balance, but working together. Neither light nor dark overpower each other during this time of year.
As one of our recurring annual prompts, drabble sequences and drabble series are allowed. These formats are explained in this post, while the standard drabble formats are explained in the community rules.
This is a two-week term to give you more time to make full use of these longer formats, if you so desire. You have until midnight your time on Friday, April 3, to answer this prompt. Please post your fills of the prompt as separate entries to the community (i.e. not replies to this entry), tagged with the prompt tag. You may post multiple standalone drabbles per entry in addition to drabble sequences and series.

Prompt: Cloud Recesses
Mar. 7th, 2026 06:43 pmTitle: A Meditation Upon the Dawn, by Lan Xichen
Author: Galadhir
Word Count/Drabble Type: 100 words
Character(s)/Ship(s): Lan Xichen/Jin Guangyao (remembered)
Rating/Warnings: None
Summary: Lan Xichen stands at the doorway of his seclusion and muses about the sunrise in Cloud Recesses
~~~~
Where there are no shadows one may attain a kind of snow blindness. Light, in its perfection, robs the eyes of sight, even as the tomb, closing, blots out all hopes, thoughts and dreams.
Early morning. I stand by my half open door and look out at the sunrise. There, at the horizon, night and day are co-mingled in glory. A burst of gold more splendid than any Jin-created tower. A colourless dew-drop coruscates upon the water-weighted pine. I step forward, exaltation kindling in my heart.
And then the clouds return.
In mist too there is a kind of blindness.
Prompt: Spring Festival/Lunar New Year
Feb. 13th, 2026 04:56 pmThis week's prompt is: Spring Festival, or the Lunar New Year, which begins on the 17th. This is one of our recurring prompts, and will run for three weeks, in order to cover the entirety of the festival. The coming year is the Year of the Fire Horse (Bing Wu), representing charismatic energy, decisive action, breakthroughs, and travel on the one hand, but also impulsivity, burning bridges, and scorched earth on the other. It's believed that the element and nature of the incoming animal changes the energy of life completely, for good or ill, and it's more beneficial if you're ready to meet it with a clean slate. To prepare for the coming year, homes are thoroughly cleansed, and the festival is celebrated with red decorations, elaborate meals, visits to family, and fireworks. You can take inspiration from any aspect of the festival or the element, nature, or myths associated with the Fire Horse.
As one of our recurring annual prompts, drabble sequences and drabble series are allowed. These formats are explained in this post, while the standard drabble formats are explained in the community rules.
You have until midnight your time on Friday, March 6, to answer this prompt. Note that this is a three-week period rather than the usual one week. Please post your fills of the prompt as separate entries to the community (i.e. not replies to this entry), tagged with the prompt tag.
