The second night of Wei Wuxian's second life is much less eventful than the first. He has new robes that reach his feet, courtesy of the Mo family's treasure room—the least they owe the nephew they tormented—and he's put as much distance between himself and them as he could coax from the cantankerous donkey he liberated from their stables. For once, he can afford an inn, but he's sleeping under the stars in case of pursuit. Mo Xuanyu's mask is memorable, but it would be worse to be recognized as himself, especially in Lanling. It's a clear night in a time of peace; he has a bedroll and fresh supplies in his qiankun pouch. He's slept considerably worse.
He also has two jars of the local wine. It may taste like water, with about as much effect, but Lanling wines never impressed him, now he thinks about it. It's better than nothing. There's a shortage of roofs in the vicinity, so he swings himself up into the branches of a sturdy-looking tree. Above him, the moon is barely waning from last night's full, yet it already looks so much dimmer. Of course, that may simply be that everything is brighter in his memories of Lan Zhan. Though nothing is as bright as Lan Zhan himself—who has again removed all color from his wardrobe.
Who are you mourning, Lan Zhan?
Perhaps it's acceptable, here with only the moon for company, to wish it was him.
