They found the unsent letter in Jin Guangyao’s treasure chamber. What had driven him to hoard incriminating evidence against himself like gold? Even before they had read a word, they recognized her hand.

I will try to get this letter to you somehow. I know you did not kill my husband. I know who did. I do not know how. I have no proof. Too dangerous to write down names—I dare not even speak them behind closed doors. Be wary! Do not walk into the monster’s cave again—and, if anything happens to me, take care of my son.

And, if Nie Huaisang worked it out, so might she.
