“You must be strong now that your brother is gone, but Er-ge and I will support you,” Jin Guangyao assures him, like a shining savior of hope- though perhaps that’s nothing more than the garish gold of his Jin robes, the weight of quality covering the grime of lies and blood and betrayal that tarnishes his soul.

“Thank you, San-ge,” Nie Huaisang says through a dramatized sob. His throat hurts from crying and his heart hurts from the burden of the truth, and in that moment, he vows to one day extinguish the light from Jin Guangyao’s eyes.

The way that NHS's raw grief helps lend a voice and credence to his lies... The complicated relationship between these two always gets me, because you KNOW JGY could rationalize away his murder of NMJ as being for Huiasang’s sake as well, and yet that betrayal sticks in NHS's teeth, in his heart like an arrow.

I love the image of the garish gold covering the grime!!!

And the parallel between NHS's throat hurting (literal) and heart hurting (metaphorical).

I especially like the "dramatized sob" because it tells us how NHS is embarking on his long game of revenge in part by playing "Mr. I Don't Know" so he's constantly overlooked. ♥
