Nie Huaisang let out a cry of dismay as the wind tugged the umbrella from his hand. Too late to snatch it, he watched it soar upward like a bird, then plummet again as the rain beat it down. Ugh, what unpleasant weather! His hair and robes were already growing sodden. Deciding to forget the umbrella—the path to it lay through several puddles, and it wasn’t worth the detour—Huaisang made a dash for the aviary.
Ducking under the roof, Huaisang sighed and pushed his wet hair back from his face. “You’re lucky I love you,” he told the birds.
He was greeted by a chorus of chirps and twitters. He’d noticed that the birds seemed to sing more when it was rainy. He whistled back at them.
Huiasang opened the door of a cage that held two little finches and coaxed them out to sit on his shoulder. They nibbled at his hair while he went down the rows of cages, giving each bird their food and fresh water. He greeted each of his birds by name, telling them how pretty they were. Huaisang liked compliments, and he thought the birds felt the same. They spent so much time preening and tending to their feathers.
“Huaisang.” His brother’s tall form ducked into the aviary. The finches cheeped in alarm and flew to the other end of the room.
“Da-ge!” Huaisang scolded. “You scared my finches.”
“You dropped your umbrella.” Nie Mingjue held it out to him. “Be careful, you don’t want to catch cold.” He hadn’t bothered to use an umbrella himself; droplets of rain ran down his hair and shoulders.
“I’m not that fragile, da-ge!” Huaisang protested. “But you can stay and keep me company while I finish feeding the birds.”
Nie Mingjue grumbled, but he stayed.

Date: 2024-03-30 11:24 pm (UTC)Nie Huaisang is adorable here with his birds. Huaisang liked compliments, and he thought the birds felt the same. They spent so much time preening and tending to their feathers. I could TOTALLY see this!
And then Nie Mingjue shows up--a nice turn of the narrative. I chuckled to learn that even finches are afraid of the Red Blade Master! But he's there to be kind--the contrast between him dripping, umbrella-less, but concerned about his little brother going out without an umbrella--says so much about his care for Huaisang. ♥

Date: 2024-03-31 09:10 pm (UTC)In my experience with pet birds, they do like being told they're pretty and good birds. :) I don't know if they understand the words or just the tone, but they seem to understand when they're being praised. *g*
Yes, one thing I love about MDZS/The Untamed is how much Nie Mingjue clearly cares about his little brother, even when their interests are so different. Thank you for commenting!
