“What’s wrong?” Sizhui said quietly, reaching for one of Wei-qianbei’s light talismans.
“Nothing,” Jingyi murmured right into his ear, sending shivers down Sizhui’s spine. “Something is far too right on the other side of the camp. We should shed some light on it.”
Oh. No. “No,” Sizhui said, but Jingyi already had his fingers on the talisman. They struggled while Sizhui insisted, “You are...absolutely not.”
The sound of a sword leaving its sheath corresponded with the flaring of the talisman. Sizhui was sure they made an incriminating sight with Jingyi sprawled across him, momentarily pinning both his hands. Jin Ling’s narrowed eyes seemed to confirm it.
“Put that away!” Zizhen said, getting to his feet. “You’re always so quick to pull out your sword.” He tugged Jingyi off of Sizhui by the back of his robes, then plucked the talisman from Sizhui’s fingers to hold it in front of Jingyi’s face. “Now, do we need to talk about what to do when someone tells you no?”
“You sound like your sister,” Jin Ling said, dropping his bedroll beside Sizhui.
“Who do you think gave me the talk?” Zizhen said grinning. “Starting at the age of three— Hey!”
“Thank you!” Jingyi said, blinking.
“Shut up,” Jin Ling said, setting the talisman behind him so it was no longer blinding anyone. “You okay?” he said to Sizhui.
He was so sweet! “Yes,” Sizhui said, smiling, then took in Jin Ling’s rumpled state. “Should I be asking you that?”
Jin Ling gave a non-committal grunt. “He’s a menace, but basically harmless.”
“Lies and untruths,” Zizhen cried, currently out of sight behind Jingyi’s broad shoulders.
“I’m familiar with the type,” Sizhui said and watched the flare of jealousy before taking a fistful of Jin Ling’s disheveled robes. “Put out the light, Jin Ling.”
