Nie Huaisang dips his brush in ink and sweeps it across the page, tracing the outline of mountains. More brushstrokes add texture and shadow to the rocky outcroppings. Humming, Nie Huaisang dips the brush again. He softens the harsh face of the mountains: here with a tree, its leaves turned toward the sun; there with a patch of moss, lush and inviting. Nature balances itself even in the starkest environments.

Nie Huaisang knows the mountains of Qinghe Nie as well as he knows his own brother's face. But Nie Mingjue is gone, and the mountains are left to endure alone.

The room is dark, with only the pale moonlight seeping through the gaps. It’s not quite enough to see Jingyi’s face, but Sizhui can picture his soft smile and feel his gaze on his skin. They’re not touching, although there’s barely a hair’s width between them, and Sizhui knows his own desire is matched by Jingyi’s, so tangible that Sizhui can feel it.

“Can I kiss you?” Jingyi asks, and Sizhui is nodding before the sentence is finished.

As Jingyi leans in, the moonlight catches across his face, and Sizhui finds his breath is stolen twice in that single moment.
