Author's Notes: Episode 33. And Rana helped smooth out the sticky spots.
He stepped back, shielding his eyes at the sudden burst of sunlight over Cloud Recesses’ rooftops. He was so used to wandering the gloom of the Burial Mounds or being trapped in the eternal night of his last moments that all this light seemed like an attack.
But the brightness shook loose memories of other sunlit days, of a boy certain of himself and his place in the world. He wasn’t that boy, hadn’t been for years before he died; however, for the first time since being called back, he felt settled. Maybe his days traveling with Little Apple were an early morning dream, and this was his first awakening in his new body.
Was this body new? Refurbished, certainly; it wasn’t the malnourished, resentful energy-soaked wreck he had thrown off the cliff. He had no scars, no brands, but still no golden core. But then, he didn’t have one when he was new the first time either. Perhaps...
The sunlight dazzled him again as it reached the white stone courtyard, making it clear he could no longer hide in the shadows. The Light Bearer had found him. Now, he needed to find Lan Zhan.
He stepped into the sun.
