Author:Eliza
Word Count/Drabble Type:250
Character(s)/Ship(s):Nie Huaisang
Rating/Warnings: G
Author's Notes: Rana made sure my rule breaking wasn’t obvious.
Nie Huaisang learned all of the Lan sect’s rules just before his second year at Cloud Recesses.
He never told anyone this. It would have completely negated the effort if he had. When he started his first year, he considered himself competent at manipulating rules, but mostly he ignored them. In watching the Lan disciples, he came to admire the way they could rotate a rule, gently twist it around an axis and gracefully slide past it. In order to avoid rules this way himself, he realized he needed to know them very well.
He did something similar with the other kinds of rules, the rules that did not live on paper, but in the nature of life, the inevitability of death, and the flow of power. These were rules which Nie Huaisang respected, learned with diligence, and could layer and combine to provide scaffolding for further creation. They were foundations, buttresses, stepping stones; he couldn’t imagine trying to elude them like the Lan disciples did the ones carved on their wall.
That’s why, when he saw the Yiling Patriarch’s salvaged notes, he knew that Wei Wuxian had also learned a similar lesson in Cloud Recesses. He always ignored the ones made of ink and opinion, but had taken the ones he’d absorbed into his bones, the ones made of existence and truth, and examined them from all sides, turned them on all axes. Then he tried to move around them.
And it looked to Nie Huaisang like he’d succeeded.
