Lan Wangji dislikes the term weapon to describe his qin. He recognises it’s effective, but Bichen will always be his first choice when forced to dispatch something corporeal. Disciples often bring qin into battle, though, sometimes having to use them as a bludgeon. Still, he can’t help but see the splatter of gore as a defilement.

He watches the red drop hang a moment from the steel before landing on the polished wood. It seems when the blood on Wangji’s strings is his own it’s different, closer to an offering. Maybe this time, it will work.

He starts Inquiry again.

Ooh. I like the unexpected twist in the penultimate para. I can well imagine him playing until his hands bleed.
