It wasn’t working. Huaisang knew the delicate beauty of the peach blossoms was beyond his skills, but he felt like he should be able to convey how the orchard was overflowing with their hopeful potential.
“It’ll rain before the end of the shi,” Da-ge said, right in Huaisang’s ear, making Huaisang jump. Huaisang shot him a glare as he sat down against the tree behind Huaisang’s seat.
“If it’s not done by then, it never will be,” Huaisang grumbled. He inked in the storm clouds on the horizon because they might as well threaten them all. As if evoked, a rumble of thunder arrived on a freshening breeze.
“Can I have it? When you’re done,” Da-ge said, softly.
Huaisang turned, surprised at the request, but nodded his agreement. As a child, he had gifted many pictures to his brother, but this was the first time Da-ge had asked.
He wiped away a light haze of tears as he turned back to the scene. He needed to be able to see the painting! Now he knew what was missing. In the foreground, under a sheltering tree, he sketched in the farmer with baskets at the ready, waiting for the inevitable fruit.
