A glimpse of white outside the inn reminded Jin Ling of catching sight of the moon when passing a window. His brain knew there was supposed to be something beautiful there, and it demanded his attention: “Stop. Look.” The squawk and flurry of chicken feathers proved his brain had been fooled again.

Jin Ling didn’t have much else to keep his attention at the moment, unless the wine counted. He’d been careful over the last hour, but he was sure his nerves were burning off the alcohol, because it wasn’t even helping with those anymore. Still, the last of the second bottle only half filled his cup.

“Another, gongzi?” the innkeeper asked.

Jin Ling shook his head. “Tea. Your best. With two cups.”

Shen hour, the note said. It was barely that, he might be drinking two pots of tea alone, as well. Waiting. But alone and waiting in the common room at the inn was better than alone and waiting in his rooms. He would just pace, get himself worked up and sweaty. Waiting here was better. Here he could drink wine and not feel like a reprobate for doing it alone.

There was another glimpse of white through the doorway, but this time his brain got it right. Fuck, he was so beautiful.

Jin Ling raised his cup to catch Lan Sizhui’s attention and downed what was left in it as Sizhui smiled and walked over. Jin Ling was glad he’d ordered tea; the last sip was heady.
