Eliza really whipped this one into shape, then helped me brainstorm a title.

There's a back path down the mountain, but Wen Xu drags Lan Wangji through Cloud Recesses. It's the longer way, putting more strain on his leg. It also allows Wen Xu to gloat over the destruction, the withdrawal of his troops a mockery in the face of the damage already inflicted. Bodies lie everywhere, Lan white and blue overwhelming Wen red and black, all liberally stained with blood.
Lan Wangji's eyes and throat burn; an acrid haze hangs over the ruin of his home. With Shifu wounded and Xiongzhang gone, the arrays have collapsed that would have contained the Wen fires. Now, he's surrounded by hungry flames devouring buildings that have sheltered generations of Lan, by charred wood and smoldering ashes. Lan Wangji glares with impotent rage as Wen Xu halts his people from further arson, but gives no orders to extinguish those already burning. He's never felt more useless.
Wen Xu calls for a halt just inside the walls of the main compound. He turns around, grinning. "Take a good look, Lan Wangji. We're withdrawing today, but it's only a matter of time before we come back. The question is, will you?"
He clearly doesn't expect an answer, and Lan Wangji's said all he had to say to the man. So, he cloaks himself in the iciest silence he can summon, gripping Bichen's scabbard hard enough its carved pattern bites into his palm.
The smells of blood and smoke linger long after they cross the border out of Gusu.
