After the lantern ceremony, walking alone, feeling unwontedly alone, Lan Wangji finds the remains of a wrecked sky lantern in a bush. Is that a rabbit’s ear, on that fragment? Distressed, he kneels and tries to disentangle paper and strings from branches. Yes, it is as he feared—this is the same lantern he saw soaring skywards, carrying the image of a rabbit, a shared resolve, an ardent wish.

He takes a deep breath, sits back on his heels, quells his fears. This changes nothing. The lantern may be out, but its light, the light of their exchange, is undiminished.

I also like Lan Wangji's mixed reaction, from distress at the wreckage of the lamp and all it stands for, to his realization that what really matters - its light, the light of their exchange, is undiminished..
