He takes it, every stroke, every slice of pain on his skin. It’s no more than he deserves, no more than he accepts. He cries silently, tears flowing down his cheeks unbidden but not unwelcome. With each strike, he feels a fraction of guilt leave his body, cleansing him, protecting him, forgiving him in a way he cannot do himself. He continues to kneel, body heading swiftly towards numbness, and forces his toes to bend, the blood returning to his lower limbs, the pain intensifying.
The punishment will end far sooner than his guilt, but he knows he deserves both.
