Madame Jin understood that this was the way of things. Acknowledge nothing. Maintain your dignity.

Madame Jin knew she could teach Jiang Yanli how to survive in the Jin household. Yanli could learn to echo her ways, to achieve her bitter triumph.

Then Yanli lit up like a blazing temple of righteousness, demanding an apology from Jin Zixun on behalf of her brother. And it was Madame Jin who learned, who echoed Yanli, who achieved a new kind of triumph.

What an important moment for them! I totally agree--when I first saw it, I wasn't sure how Madame Jin would react, and I loved her stepping up to support Yanli in an environment where Madame Jin herself didn't seem to get much support.

This is great - I love the relationship between Madame Jin and Jiang Yanli here, where it's clear Madame Jin loves Yanli and what that means for her - the tough love of trying to guide her through the Jin minefield, and ultimately being changed by her.

And yes, ultimately it's Yanli who helps Madame Jin to change, at least a little. I wish we'd seen more of her after that scene.

Oooooh, I like this. Jiang Yanli is so often seen as someone who needs to be protected, to be taught, by both her peers and her elders, and so it's nice to get the perspective of someone realizing that she has her own strength, quiet strength that waits to rage, and that perhaps she has things worth teaching too.
