Yanli knows she does not quite belong. She is no Yu Ziyuan, nor Cangse Sanren, and women need to be stronger to hold their own here. She listens and observes intently, regardless. Insight may be useful, even when power to match is lacking, in Yunmeng as much as, perhaps, in Lanling.
She has reason to sympathise with Meng Yao and is happy for him when Lan Xichen is kind. Meng Yao’s gratitude is touching! An unexpected feeling of unease lingers. Despite mild manners, Yanli senses, somehow, this young man is not at all resigned—unlike her—to remaining an outsider.
