Relocation

There was much discussion about the rebuilding of Cloud Recesses. Some younger members urged for new, 'improved' styles. Their elders had stressed the importance of continuity, and wanted a faithful reconstruction of the beautiful buildings that had been viciously destroyed.

Lan Zhan had grown up, exploring and mentally mapping every nook and cranny between the low and elegant buildings so, when a particular corner was rebuilt in not quite the same way, he at first found it disconcerting. Until he realised that home was no longer here. Home was now a keen and intelligent gaze; a quick and sunny smile.

Those considerations about the rebuilding are very believable and I like the conclusion!

Living in the UK, I have watched many a heated argument about what to do with ancient buildings that are falling down. But one thing I've learned within my own lifetime is that the people you love are more important than any beautiful building.
