Lately, Lan Wangji has taken to shadowing them. Wherever they go, there he is, a stone-faced sentry hovering in their periphery.

"Ridiculous," Wei-xiong mimics, undaunted even by impending doom. "If he wants to be friends, he should just say so."

For all his cleverness, Wei-xiong can be naive. Huaisang knows better. Lan Wangji is the Cloud Recesses’s best line of defense against layabouts and troublemakers: his scrutiny marks the end of their summer fun.

"Well, that’s easily solved. Remember me fondly, Nie-xiong!"

And off he goes towards his doom; Huaisang salutes his bravery and promptly scampers in the opposite direction.
