“Please! I know you don’t—” his lips pressed into a firm line, “I need to do something.”

Wen Qing took his outstretched hand in both of hers, tipping the weight of the purse into her palm. It was heavier than it looked. They may survive the winter.

As they stood there, the lives of her tiny clan cupped between their hands, Sandu Shengshou’s formidable gaze eased into something closer to the warm light of the boy she’d first met. For just that moment, she let herself live in the skin of another Wen Qing, the one with a beautiful comb.

WELL THAT LAST LINE JUST GUTTED ME. The way that CQL built a relationship for JC and WQ never fails to hit me right in the heart, and the way that Wen Qing's pride and practicality keep her from ever being able to truly let herself give in to that desire and relationship... She can never be the Wen Qing with the beautiful comb, because she must also be the Wen Qing with the starving, aged family who needs her stewardship, the Wen Qing juggling her shattered allegiances and tightrope of obligations. Thank you so much. I understand that her character was expanded for CQL and I'm so glad it was. It gave us such a complex and compelling woman in a story in need of a few more of those.
