That was a lot of water.
Jingyi stripped out of his sweat-drenched robes as he watched Jin Ling and Zizhen already playing like otters. Even Sizhui hurried toward the lake, though without the running jump the other two had used. Jingyi walked up behind him as he sat down on the dock and pushed himself off without hesitation, then watched him slip under the surface for a horrible moment before he came up spluttering and dripping.
Their friends teased his cautious entrance with words and water which Sizhui returned, grinning. “This is only my third time swimming outside of the training pond,” he said, sending a cultivation-enhanced wave at Jin Ling who was doing most of the splashing. He looked up at Jingyi and said quietly, “It’s not much deeper here. I touched the bottom before coming back up.”
Jingyi followed Sizhui’s example of sitting on the dock, his feet just touching the water. It was warm. Well, cooler than the air and his overheated skin, but much warmer than the waters around Cloud Recesses. It was tempting, but still intimidating. “When did you go swimming?” he asked, watching Sizhui float far enough away that he could see Sizhui’s arms moving under the water like the lotus stalks along the shore.
“With Ning-shushu. I’m not sure if you can call what I do swimming,” Sizhui said, looking over at their friends as they raced across the bay with strong, confident form. “Come on. It’s really no different than the pond.”
It was. This water wasn’t confined in a stone boundary; it opened into the wider river which ran into the ocean. Jingyi threw himself into the water with an obnoxious splash anyway. As he broke the surface, he felt the pulse of the larger world. Breathing with it, he laughed.
